Gourd didgeridoos are made from "snake gourds." Occasionally, a single snake gourd may be long enough for a didgeridoo to be made directly from it; but, it is much more likely that it will be necessary to build the didgeridoo body from two or more pieces of snake gourds. Snake gourds are simply a type of hardshell (Lagenaria siceraria) gourd-- a member of the Curcurbitaceae family of plants, which includes pumpkins, squash, melons, watermelons, ornamental gourds, cucumbers, etc. Gourdgeridoos are made from two or more "snake" gourds which are pieced together and decorated by woodburning, dyeing and painting.
